China in the war
China enters
China intervened in the war in 1950 when they secretly marched Chinese troops into North Korea before launching an offensive to halt the UNC's advance. The troops entered into North Korea through the Yalu river as seen in the image on the left.
The Chinese's main goal of their intervention was to recover most of North Korea and maintain the communist government there. "Few armies of the 20th century suffered such a rapid reversal of fortune as the United Nations Command (UNC) when China intervened in the Korean war" Unknown |
cHINA'S aDVANCE
In their first 5 offensives, the Chinese had stopped the UNC advance and by December had completely driven the UNC out of North Korea. From this, the UNC suffered many losses and major battles including the Chinese almost completely overwhelming the United States Marines.
The Chinese continued pushing the UNC back and managed to recapture Seoul. By January 1951, the UNC had been driven 400km south down the peninsula and 70km beyond Seoul. At this point the UNC had managed to recover and halt the Chinese advance and started pushing back.
However in April came the 'Fifth Phase' of the Chinese offensive where they launched massive offensive at Kapyong where they planned to push back the UNC forces and recapture Seoul. 3RAR played a vital part in the halting the offensive at Kapyong.
The Chinese were the main enemy of the UNC both militarily and politically.
