How it started
The origins of the Korean War
America and the soviet unionThe origins of the Korean war can be traced back to WW2. After 35 years of Japanese occupation, the Korean peninsula was left to the U.S and the Soviet Union. They split the country in two (the dividing point being called the 38th parallel) the Soviets taking the North and the U.S taking the South. The Soviet Union fostered a communist government in North Korea under Kim II-Sung while the U.S supported a provisional government headed by Syngman Rhee. 5 years later, North Korea invaded South Korea, starting the Korean War.
